Bundles of Wood, a solo exhibition by Italian photographer Nicola Lo Calzo, is on display at Light Work. Since 2010, Lo Calzo has traversed Atlantic coastal areas to research buried memories of the African Diaspora. His latest project, Bundles of Wood, on view through Oct. 17, documents the rich local history of the Underground Railroad in Central New York. Lo Calzo will visit Syracuse University for an artist talk and conversation with playwright Kyle Bass at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11. A group of Syracuse University scholars, faculty, students and local DJs will have an open dialogue about the controversial nature of hip-hop and Reggaeton lyrics, the global impact on the genres in the music industry and its undisputed success in the conquering young markets in almost every culture worldwide. Panelists will include: SU Professors Todd Herreman, specialist in Music Industry; David Knapp, expert on Arab Hip-Hop; Biko Mandela Gray, author of "Bread, Breaking Beats: Churches and Hip-Hop - A Guide to Key Issues." They will be joined by Hasan "DJ Maestro" Stephens, director of Good Life Youth Foundation and professional DJ; Liamna Pestana Roche, student at Setnor School of Music who will talk about the ban on Reggaeton in her native Cuba, and Roberto Luis Perez, professional Latin music DJ and co-founder of La Familia de la Salsa.

The Building Men Program Breakfast will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. The fourth annual Building Men Program Breakfast will be the official start of this mentoring organization's "Breakout" year. The year the group will  breakout of the old way of thinking about Building Men and start off fresh with a new curriculum and programs to help young men in the Syracuse City School District. ITC students will be making breakfast, and members of Building Men will report on the new initiatives starting this fall, especially its new signature program My Brother's Keeper. Attendees will be able to ask questions to a panel of high school Building Men boys to hear first hand their experiences with the program. Cost is $40 per person.

The Syracuse Violence Reduction Expo will broaden awareness of anti-violence resources within the Syracuse community for those who do not have access to these resources. This event will bring together anti-violence groups, programs and initiatives in the city of Syracuse to highlight the many resources offered by these groups and to connect those resources with those affected by violence or living in communities where they risk being affected. The event will also feature the voices of survivors of shootings, a martial arts demonstration by the students of Hung-Ga Syracuse Kung Fu Downtown, original music by Sadeesha Morgan and DJ Richard Boyer. The Violence Reduction Expo is funded by a Gifford Foundation “What If” mini-grant and additional financial support from Molina Health Care.
