The Greater Syracuse Land Bank is implementing a project that organizes students and volunteers to paint murals on the plywood that is used to secure windows and doors of vacant houses. The purpose of the Land Bank is to return vacant or underutilized properties to productive use. To date, the Land Bank has acquired over 1,200 properties and currently owns over 800 properties in Syracuse. The Land Bank will host a weekend painting event open to the public on June 3. The community as a whole will have the opportunity to participate in brightening up the city. Paint, plywood and a place to paint will be provided. Completed boards will be located on Land Bank properties throughout the city.

The Bike for Brady (and walk, too) will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 4, starting at the Brady Farm, 150 Ford Ave. The fourth annual community bike ride supports the Brady Faith Center programs, including Pedal to Possibilities. This summer, a 3K walk has been added so all can participate. Bike rides include: 10-, 20- and 40-mile treks through the streets and neighborhoods of Syracuse. Event is co-chaired by Arnie Artessa, David Philippone and Bob Dougherty. Registration cost is $25 per person.

In a cultural partnership with M&T Jazz Fest, Joined Artists, Musicians & Singers, Inc. (JAMS) will host a concert featuring UAD from 5 to 6 p.m. June 9, at Onondaga Community College. This is a free event. Headliners will be Ramsey Lewis & Todd Rungren.

The 15th Annual Duck Race to End Racism is a free family festival that brings together people from all over the community. It features a huge line-up of children’s entertainment, cooperative games, face painting, community information booths and duck races galore. It is a celebration with people of many colors, many different backgrounds and many different walks of life coming together to demonstrate what the world would look like if racism did not exist. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $5 each to participate in the general public Community Duck Race featuring many prizes and gifts.

A Perfect 10 Natural Hair Salon will hold the No Lye Celebration Saturday, June 10, at the Dewitt Community Room. Its purpose is to allow the opportunity for the women of Syracuse and surrounding areas to meet in their own communities while networking, sharing, celebrating, embracing and educating one another. It is designed to share information, techniques, inspiration and products to aid individuals in their natural hair journey. Attendees will enjoy food, wine, games, prizes, raffles and an array of Thank You gifts. Project X Stop the Violence Rally will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 11, at The Atrium, 100 S. Salina St. This event is dedicated to those who have lost their lives to violence and those affected. Families who have lost a loved one to violence are encouraged to attend. Bring a candle and picture of your loved one. Guests include Chief of Police Frank Fowler, Mayor Stephanie Miner and other local anti-violence groups. Free to attend.
