HEAP provides limited subsidies for heating and utility costs. These community  sessions are offered to help Onondaga County seniors age 60, or older, and income eligible, apply for HEAP benefits. Appointments are not needed. Seniors who are unable to attend can call (315) 435-2362 and request that an application be mailed.

An I-81 Indoor Block Party will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 20 at the Creators Lounge, 2223 S. Salina St. The party will be hosted and feature music by DJ Big Boy. Even is sponsored by the New York Civil Liberties Union and Urban Jobs Task Force.

This annual Bike Give Away will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21. Bike donations may be dropped off at the NY State Fairgrounds until Dec 19.

From 3  to 4 p.m. families may enjoy free holiday activities and visit with Santa. Then from 4 to 6 p.m., a free screening of "The Grinch" will begin. Event is sponsored, in part, by Price Chopper. For more information, call (315) 473-4330.

The Hip Hop Nutcracker will perform one show in Syracuse at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at the Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater, 411 Montgomery St. Directed and choreographed by Jennifer Weber, this remixed production of Tchaikovsky’s classic music is performed by a cast of a dozen all-star dancers, a DJ, a violinist and MC Kurtis Blow, one of Hip Hop’s founding fathers. Tickets range from $37 to $67; additional fees may apply. Tickets will go on sale 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, online at Ticketmaster.com or in person at the Solvay Bank Box Office at The Oncenter, 760 S. State St.

A Reading and Discussion Forum will be held Friday evenings through Feb. 7. The topic will be Maya Angelou's "The Sweetness of Charity." Future sessions will examine excerpts from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; W.E.B. DuBois, and more. There is no need to read ahead of time, just come with an open mind. Sessions will begin at 6 p.m. at the Cannon Street Community Center, 515 Cannon St., and are being offered by FORCE, Focusing Our Resources for Community Enlightenment. The Southside Tomorrow's Neighborhoods Today (TNT) will hold a community meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, at the South Side Innovation Center. Following meeting updates, 4th District Commo Councilor Latoya Allen will moderate a panel, "New Year New Chair," with Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter, Sen. Rachel May, 16th District County Legislator Vernon Williams, Jr., 34d District Common Councilor Chol Majok, Councilor-at-Large Michael Greene and Syracuse City School Board Commissioner Tamika Barnett.

A public meeting on the Draft Scoping document for ReZone Syracuse will be held 6 p.m. Jan. 7, in the Common Council Chambers in City Hall. This meeting will provide the public an opportunity to comment on the document prepared for the project under the SEQR process.  After the comment period is closed, the project team will compile all of the comments received, and prepare a Final Scoping document for the Syracuse Common Council’s review and acceptance. This Final Scoping document will identify the issues to be addressed in the subsequent preparation of the DGEIS.

An organization meeting of the city of Syracuse's Common Council will be held at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, in the Common Council Chambers for the purpose of considering: Election of City Clerk, Election of President Pro-Tempore, Election of Majority Leader, Election of Minority Leader and Election of Majority Whip. Also, Common Council President Helen Hudson to adopt Rules of Procedure of the Syracuse Common Council for 2020-2021 and appoint the Standing Committee of the Syracuse Common Council, and the City Clerk will designate The Syracuse Post-Standard as the official newspaper for the city of Syracuse for the publication of legal notices during 2020-2021.
