The Stand receives three honors in club’s first virtual presentation
Reporters, special contributors and photographers for The Stand Newspaper were awarded three honors from the Syracuse Press Club May 19 for work in Print & Online Journalism.
On the second evening of a four-night event held virtually due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, honors were presented for best print and online media by host Brent Axe of Syracuse.com and ESPN Radio Syracuse. Typically media professionals and students gather at an annual banquet, but in the midst of the pandemic the club condensed the announcements to 15-minute Facebook Live broadcasts over several nights.
The Stand’s Director Ashley Kang took first place for the initial article in the newspaper’s series on local couples, “Unconditional Love.”
Axe read comments from the judges who wrote: “This article treats romance seriously without being sappy. The reporter used a light touch with the statistics, keeping this from being too dry and let the sources provide the love and the honesty to make the article work.”
The Stand’s three awards in the non-daily print categories were:
- 1st Place in Human Interest Feature or Series: “Unconditional Love,” reporting by Ashley Kang & photography by Ben Cleeton
- 2nd Place in News Feature for “Uncertain Future,” reporting by Ashley Kang with additional reporting and photography by The Stand Intern Nabiha Asim
- 3rd Place in Sports Story for “Cycling Forward,” reporting by The Stand Special Columnist Jeff Kramer & photography by Cherilyn Beckles
Additionally volunteers to The Stand David Haas, of @SyracuseHistory, took 1st Place for Best Use of Social Media, and long-time photo volunteer Mike Greenlar, photographer for Syracuse.com, was named a Wall of Distinction Honoree.
Awards will continue May 20 and 21, airing at 7 p.m.
Wednesday evening TeNesha Murphy of NewsChannel 9 will host TV and online awards and Thursday Ricky Sayer of Syracuse University will present student awards.
