The newly formed South Side Collective, which provides community children with tools to communicate visually through photography, will host a photo exhibit from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 5, at the South Side Communication Center.

Celebrate Urban Birds Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at Southside Academy Charter School. The event will feature a bird-art activity for younger children, and the school's science teacher will take a group outside on a bird walk to collect observation data for Cornell. Pizza and refreshments will be sold during lunch as a fundraiser for the school's athletic teams.

Join Betts Branch to help select the winners of "Poetry and Art in the Bus." The final selection of winners will be decided by the general public. Workshop providers: Martin Willitts Jr. (poetry) and Michael Sickler (drawings). This project was made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a re-grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.

May is National Inventor’s Month, and Hazard Library is celebrating by experimenting with wind power. Participants will build a model wind turbine, then explore and test common materials to identify modifications that will improve it. Will wind power our future? That’s up to you. The Greater Syracuse Land Bank will host a weekend painting event that is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at South Presbyterian Church located at 2110 S. Salina St. The community as a whole will have the opportunity to participate in brightening up our city. Paint, plywood and a place to paint will be provided. Enjoy the newly released film “A Dog’s Purpose” at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 25, at Beauchamp Branch Library. The film chronicles one dog who finds himself reborn over and over again as different breeds and different genders over the course of time. Connecting with each of the different families he becomes a part of, the dog examines his own life experiences in each generation to discover what his true purpose in life is. Learn basic tips on getting jobs, places you can apply and general information that you can use to enhance your employability. The Greater Syracuse Land Bank is implementing a project that organizes students and volunteers to paint murals on the plywood that is used to secure windows and doors of vacant houses. The purpose of the Land Bank is to return vacant or underutilized properties to productive use. To date, the Land Bank has acquired over 1,200 properties and currently owns over 800 properties in Syracuse. The Land Bank will host a weekend painting event open to the public on June 3. The community as a whole will have the opportunity to participate in brightening up the city. Paint, plywood and a place to paint will be provided. Completed boards will be located on Land Bank properties throughout the city.

The Bike for Brady (and walk, too) will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 4, starting at the Brady Farm, 150 Ford Ave. The fourth annual community bike ride supports the Brady Faith Center programs, including Pedal to Possibilities. This summer, a 3K walk has been added so all can participate. Bike rides include: 10-, 20- and 40-mile treks through the streets and neighborhoods of Syracuse. Event is co-chaired by Arnie Artessa, David Philippone and Bob Dougherty. Registration cost is $25 per person.
