Dedication of Cecile Memorial Plaza

The Memorial Plaza at the Cecile Community Center, 174 W. Seneca Turnpike, will be formally dedicated in a ceremony from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 15. The ceremony will recognize those who have placed engraved bricks in the plaza as a remembrance, tribute or memorial. The ceremony will permit those in attendance to express their support for the Valley neighborhood. Light refreshments will be served. The plaza is a project of the Meachem Area Parks Association, a not-for-profit corporation with tax-exempt status, with support from TNT 4 – Valley and the Central New York Community Foundation. Placement of engraved bricks is a continuing process as bricks are ordered from the Association. Reviving Place Project Community Meeting

Tell your story of the South Side during a community meeting for the Reviving Place Project set for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, at Southwest Community Center in the lobby.Join in for a community conversation about the places residents care about and their future. Onondaga Citizen League Meeting

The Onondaga Citizen League will hold its next meeting of the OCL study, How CNY Moves, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, in the SUNY Oswego Metro Center at 100 South Salina Street (the Atrium office building on Clinton Square) in Room 129. Coffee, tea, water and sweets will be provided. Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch. The group will review the work of Maxwell School students, who are working on their MPA Capstone project exploring some best practices and model programs in transportation systems. The group will also explore some of the latest trends in land use and transportation planning in other communities. In addition, Megan Costa, assistant director of Onondaga County Planning, will talk about how planning works at different levels of local government, and discuss land use, demographics, and transportation and mobility considerations in planning. Sires’ Sunday

Syracuse Housing Authority (SHA) has partnered with Jubilee Homes of Syracuse to present “Sires’ Sunday." The event celebrating fatherhood will serve as the kick-off for Jubilee Homes’ annual Southwest Showcase Sundays’ concert series. The Sires’ Sunday festivities will be held at the Spirit of Jubilee Park, located on the 100 block of South Ave. The date and time is Fathers’ Day from 1 to 7 p.m. June 21.

A meeting about the Phase II Creekwalk plans will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, at the Seals Community Center at Kirk Park, 300 West Borden Avenue, Syracuse. The City of Syracuse will present in greater detail on the Creekwalk Project and continue to gather public input as part of the preliminary design process for the second phase of the Onondaga Creekwalk. The Creekwalk Phase II Project involves constructing a continuous pedestrian/bicycle trail that will extend the existing Creekwalk within the Onondaga Creek Corridor, from Armory Square (West Jefferson Street) south 2.2 miles to West Colvin Street.

This meeting will be a listening session to hear from community residents about safety in our schools. Syracuse Police Department will communicate its role in the schools. Outdoor Film: ‘Black or White’

Bone Marrow Drive for Baby King

The Elks Lodge #1104 will host a bone marrow drive from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 11, as part of its annual family day in honor of 2-year old Baby King, who was born with CD40, a hereditary immune deficiency that without a bone marrow transplant will become fatal. The most likely match is someone of your same race. There is currently no match for Baby King on the Be the Match Registry. Annually, 12,000 individuals with blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, sickle cell and other life-threatening illnesses are looking for a bone marrow donor match to save their lives.
