A community meeting is set for 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at the Southwest Community Center to further discuss a request from A Tiny Homes for Good of the County Legislature to donate county land on West Kennedy Street to the group. A Tiny Home for Good will discuss its proposal to build four units on county land at the corner of South Avenue and West Kennedy Street. The meeting is hosted by Common Councilors Monica Williams and Khalid Bey, and moderated by Sharon Owens, CEO of the SWCC, in an effort to hear more comments from residents.
Asian Elephant Extravaganza will be held from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the zoo. Event is free with paid admission or zoo membership. Celebrate Asian culture and honor the zoo’s magnificent Asian elephants. Enjoy elephant demonstrations, keeper talks, cultural performances, games and activity stations for all ages.
A free Back to School & Community Celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at Skiddy Park, sponsored by REACH Community Relief International. The following community organizations will also be on site to register students for free youth programming offered throughout the community: YWCA Girl’s Inc,./STYA (Successfully Transitioning Youth to Adolescence), Catholic Charities – Vincent House, Pretty Girls Rock, Saturday Academy with 100 Black Men of Syracuse, Delta Youth Initiatives, Le Moyne College Upward Bound and Mercy Works (iCan Robotics Program, Teen Tech, SYNERGY, Passport 2 Vision, Vision Velocity). This event is open for the entire community.
Believe in Syracuse will hold an Office Opening from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at South Side Innovation Center. Believe in Syracuse's Office Opening is sponsored by Wegmans who is providing free food and beverages for the event. Also at the event, attendees will learn more about the South Side Innovation Center (SSIC) and all the tenants that call it home.
The Eastside Community Festival will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at Bethany Baptist Church. The festival will include a kids zone, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a community church kickoff, live music and more. Meeting of the Minds: Minority Business Networking Event will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Nikao Eventz & Catering, 128 Burnet Ave. Cost to attend is $10. On the second Tuesday of every month, Nikao Eventz & Catering and Cuse Culture Magazine will host this networking event that “Bridges the Gap” between minority businesses within the Central New York region. Walter Dixie will host a community event for residents to hear from all local candidates running for public office this coming November. The session will begin at 6 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Southwest Community Center.
