SUNY Upstate will host a diversity in medicine conference -- Shifting the Power: Health Justice at Upstate 2019. The conference will include short sessions and interactive workshops on such topics as: “Racism in Medicine,” “Health Effects of Inequality,” “Healthcare in the Prison System,” “Refugee Health” and more. It will be held in the new academic building on the SUNY Upstate campus, 766 Irving Ave. The conference is free and open to the public. Narcan Training

Every day in our country, 130 people die from an overdose of heroin or prescription pain killers, collectively known as opioids. The opioid epidemic affects every corner of society. Naloxone (commonly known as Narcan) can be administered to help reverse the effect of an overdose and save a life. In just 30 minutes, you can learn to administer this drug through a nasal spray by trainers from Helio Health. Coffee and donuts will be provided as the trainers walk attendees through how to recognize the signs of an overdose and how to safely administer this life-saving treatment. Home Energy Assistance Program Sign-up

Representatives from the Huntington Family Center Senior Program will be on hand to help seniors or other eligible patrons learn about HEAP. The Home Energy Assistance Program helps low income persons pay for heating costs with a one-time annual grant. Patrons can learn if they meet eligibility requirements and how to sign-up for benefits. For adults. Level 1.

Planned Parenthood Office Hours

Planned Parenthood educator Mallory will distribute brochures, fact sheets and give-a-ways, answer questions and talk to teens one-on-one about family planning, sexual health, sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS, minors’ rights and much more. All materials include information about where to access low-cost reproductive health care. If appropriate, referrals will be made to partner agencies for additional service needs. Office hours are held in the library's TeenSpace, Level 1.

Career and Technical Education Expo

On Jan. 23 and 24, the Syracuse City School District will host the fifth annual Career and Technical Education Expo. All SCSD eighth-grade students will attend, where they will be able to experience firsthand all of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs provided by the district. The CTE Expo will be open to parents, community members and business/ higher education partners from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24. The Expo will be held at PSLA at Fowler High School in the school gymnasium.

Public Forum on Childhood Lead Poisoning

100 Black Men of Syracuse, as an organization that serves youth from neighborhoods where the lead crisis is considered most severe, is joining others in sounding the alarm about childhood lead poisoning by co-hosting, with Black Nurses Rock Syracuse, a one-hour, public forum on the subject at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28.
