Rise Above Poverty Benefit Brunch

Rise Above Poverty will host a benefit brunch to raise funds to provide new winter coats to 60 to 75 students in need to ensure they are prepared for the harsh Syracuse winter. Rise Above Poverty’s mission is to bring community awareness to the socio-economic issues of poverty and homelessness in the Syracuse City School District, and the group works to distribute toiletries and apparel for students in need. The menu for the benefit brunch will include choice of Belgian waffles with fruit topping or French toast; scrambled eggs or egg casserole; hash brown casserole; fresh fruit bowl; bacon, ham or sausage; choice of beef burgundy, baked chicken or fried chicken; choice of assorted Danish, muffins or bagels; Italian toast, and coffee, tea and juice. Youth Development Training Program

Hope for US Housing is offering a free carpentry training workshop for young men and women in the Syracuse area. An open house orientation will be offered from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Hope for US Housing Corp. Open to youth ages 12 to 17. The program offers youth in the community a chance to work hands-on with dedicated mentors. This is a six-week program where youth will learn the basics of the carpentry trade, as well as life skills needed to be successful in the workforce. All materials include information about where to access low-cost reproductive health care. If appropriate, referrals will be made to partner agencies for additional service needs. University Lecture Series with Robert Shetterly

Painter Robert Shetterly will be coming to Syracuse University with all 235 pieces from his portrait series “Americans Who Tell the Truth: Models of Courageous Citizenship.” The portraits consist of historical figures who fought courageously for social justice such as Susan B. Anthony and Malcolm X. It also consists of contemporary heroes, such as Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha who was the first to bring attention to the presence of lead in Flint Michigan’s drinking water. The portraits will hang in the Panasci Lounge as a public exhibition from Nov. 26 to Nov. 30. The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 29 in Setnor Auditorium in Crouse College.
