Sankofa Food Share

Cafe Sankofa 2323 S. Salina St., Syracuse, NY, United States

The Sankofa Wellness and Resource Center presents a bi-weekly food share on Wednesdays. The center will provide dry goods (rice, beans etc.) and fresh produce. Items are set up for Grab N Go, and organizers will be utilizing social distancing guidelines to provide the food items. Photo ID is preferred. Pre-registration is not required. Online Workshop: Nutrition Facts Label

A Nutrition Facts Label workshop is presented by Just Say Yes to Fruits & Vegetables, a partner of the Food Bank of Central New York. During the session, organizers will walk you through this important information, making it easier to make healthy food choices. Register by visiting bit.ly/JSYSept2. Participants will be sent a Zoom meeting link. Participants can also stop by JSY’s tent at the Downtown Farmers’ Market Sept. 8 to pick up coupons, a helpful kitchen tool and recipes.

Horizons: New Film Out of Central New York

Light Work’s Urban Video Project will host "Horizons: New Film Out of Central New York" Sept. 3 – 5. In partnership with the Innovative Group of CNY, the two-day showcase highlights films by 2020 CNY Film Short Competition winners, including Isaak Cintron, Carlton Daniel, Kathryn Ferentchak and Charles Stulck.

Exhibition patrons visiting the plaza must maintain a social distance of at least 6 feet between individuals at all times, except for groups visiting from the same household. All are encouraged to wear face masks.

CNY Young Naturalists 

Each week, Rebecca from CNY Young Naturalists will lead a lesson on an interesting nature topic and provide activities to try outside and include in a nature journal. Then, at the following meeting, participants will discuss what they found in nature and have recorded in their journals. All are welcome to this free program, but please be aware that the activities are geared for children ages 7 to 12. Visit bit.ly/YoungNaturalists to sign up. Community Breast Cancer Screening

South Side Innovation Center 2610 S. Salina St., Syracuse, NY, United States

The National Black Leadership Commission on Health will host the Upstate University Hospital Mammography Van in the South Side this month. The van is part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s “Get Screened, No Excuses” Breast Cancer Initiative, which aims to remove obstacles to breast cancer screening for women in New York. To be eligible, women should be 40 years and older, not have had a mammogram in the past 12 months and not be experiencing breast problems.
