The Link Gallery at the Warehouse will present Syracuse University’s PAL Project collaboration with Southwest Community Center with a public Reception from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at the Nancy Cantor Warehouse, 350 W. Fayette St. The project, No Pressing Rewind, is free and open to the public.

Father Greg Boyle, an American Jesuit priest and the founder and director of Homeboy Industries and author of "Tattoos on the Heart," will visit Syracuse and present during the workshop "The Calling of Delight: Gangs, Service and Kinship." This is not the work of helping, but of finding kinship and “our common calling to delight in one another,” the point of Christian service. The workshop will also feature members from the Trauma Response Team. The morning panel will include Larry Williams (moderator), Tim Jennings Bey, Arnett Haygood-El and others who have struggled with life within the gang culture. A second workshop will follow, "The Methodology: Love, Community and Tenderness." At this workshop, Boyle will share that, in working with marginalized populations, love is the answer, community is the context and tenderness binds us to one another. The Stand will hold an interactive talk-back session with former gang members featured in the paper's October Cover story.

Quante Wright, former member of Brighton Brigade, and General Davis, a former gang leader are profiled. In the piece, the two discuss how the lure of fast cash and notoriety led them to make decisions — before they were even teenagers — that affected their lives for decades. Now both share their stories openly, in an effort to sway at-risk youth from landing behind bars. Both are also fathers. One is at a pivotal point to find ways to prevent his sons from following in his footsteps, while the other watched his oldest son repeat his mistakes.

The event is free and open to the public. Coffee and refreshments will be provided.

The Syracuse Parks Conservancy will host the 8th Annual “Bravest vs. Finest” basketball game at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Henninger High School. This friendly competition pits players from the Syracuse Police Department (the Finest) against players from the Syracuse Fire Department (the Bravest). Basketball isn’t the way they make their living, but these “amateurs” fight hard to come out on top. The public is invited to join in for this suspense filled contest, and root for the team of your choice. There is no charge for admission; however voluntary donations may be made to the Syracuse Parks Conservancy. Money raised through the support of various game sponsors will help the Conservancy buy flags for the Sheridan First Responder's Park in Eastwood, replenish a fund for environmental grants and help with SPC rent and operating expenses.
