Aggie Lane with Urban Jobs Task Force will speak as part of a new Rotary Community Chat program. The event will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, at the Grace Episcopal Church. Believe in Syracuse's 3rd Birthday Party will be Jan. 28th at the Landmark Theatre.
The party is about all the progress Syracuse has made over the past year. It's the group's biggest annual event and this year will include the 2nd Annual Believe in Syracuse Awards.
Mayor Stephanie Miner will present the 2016 State of the City Thursday, Jan. 28, at the Southwest Community Center. The event will begin with a reception at 6:15, followed by the program beginning at 7 p.m. RSVP to RSVP@SyrGov.net.
The Dr. King Community Celebration will be held Saturday, Jan. 30, at Nottingham High School. The event will feature workshops, community groups, and performances by Syracuse Elks Pride Drumline, Bellegrove Missionary Baptist Church Youth Choir and the Cuse Diva's plus many more. The 31st Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will be held Sunday, Jan. 31. Dinner precedes the program at 4:30 p.m., doors open at 4 p.m. and event will be held at the Carrier Dome. Evening program is free; dinner tickets for the general public will be sold through the Schine Box Office, and are available on an individual basis ($30) or in blocks of 10 ($300). The monthly Partnership for Onondaga Creek Meeting will be held 6 p.m. Feb 2, at Brady Faith Center, 404 South Ave. Guest speaker will be Jeanette Zoeckler, M.P.H., who is lead on a project to assess occupational health needs of the Syracuse’s low-wage workers. The National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, Inc.’s 2016 Winning at Living: State of HIV in Black America conference will reveal what it takes to win the fight at a pivotal time in history. Gain and share insights as we convene the HIV/AIDS community, including stakeholders, providers, funders and consumers, those who receive care. Hear from expert speakers and change agents who will address the current science of HIV/AIDS and identify the steps needed to end the epidemic in line with the 2020 action plan. Featured Speakers include: Gail E. Wyatt, PhD, Clinical Psychologist, Board Certified Sex Therapist and Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at The UCLA Semel Institute; and Darrell P. Wheeler, PhD, MPH, ACSW President, National Association of Social Workers Vice Provost for Public Engagement and Dean of Social Welfare of the University at Albany - SUNY.
“Black Love Matters,” a National Black HIV Awareness Day event, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at B & B Cocktail Lounge, 310 South Ave. The event features live music by World Be Free, lots of give-aways and food. There is no cost to attend. Sponsored by ACR Health’s Communities of Color initiative and Upstate Medical University, Black Love Matters offers free and confidential HIV and STD testing; an activity involving wristbands that simulates HIV infections; and education about National Black HIV Awareness Day. Some representatives from “HIV Stops with Me” will come by to share their stories and hand out poster from the campaign.
As part of the Imagining America Prison Theater Film series, “Shakespeare Behind Bars” (2005), will be screened at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at Grace Episcopal Church. In this revelatory trip into and around a prison production at Luther Luckett Max. Security Prison, viewers will embark on a year-long journey with the Shakespeare Behind Bars theatre troupe. Led by director Curt Tofteland, whose innovative work with Luther Luckett inmates began in the mid-1990s, the prisoners cast themselves in roles reflecting their personal history and fate. Their individual stories, including information about their crimes, are interwoven with the plot of The Tempest as the inmates delve deeply into the characters they portray while confronting their personal demons.
