Sankofa Fest ’19

The Southside Community Coalition (SCC) will host the second Sankofa Fest from noon to 8 p.m. Aug. 10, at Sankofa Park, 2101 S. Salina St. The festival will feature local performing artists, as well as, nationally recognized artists including Farrah Presents Tribal Hop and violinist Windy Indie. The festival will begin with a parade, and festival attendees may attend workshops on yoga, Doula practices, local civic issues and others.

18th Annual Back to School Supply Give Away

This summer’s 18th annual Mary Nelson School Supply Give Away will be held Saturday, Aug. 17, on the corner of South Salina Street and Wood Avenue. It will open with a youth parade at 10 a.m. and includes educational, health and resource vendors, entertainment, games and food. Backpacks provided to students from Pre-K to college level who have registered.

Panel Discussion: Climate Crisis

CNY Rise 275 W. Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse, NY, United States

A panel discussion featuring environmental leaders and climate activists will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, at CNY Rise, 275 W. Seneca Turnpike. Representatives of local climate action groups will be available to provide information about how the public can work together to respond compassionately to the effects of climate change. A musical performance by Dylan Gilbert will introduce the program. The event, organized by the Zen Center of Syracuse, is free and open to the public. Co-sponsors include CNY Rise, Syracuse Peace Council/ Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation (NOON), Skä•noñh – Great Law of Peace Center and Interfaith Works of Central New York.

Hosted by Joan Hillsman's Music Network, Inc. and The Golden Hearts Ministry of Bethany Baptist Church, this event in remembrance of Aretha Franklin will screen the historical movie "Amazing" that celebrates The Queen of Soul. Known as a Civil Rights advocate and extraordinary musician of all genres, Franklin never forgot her roots: Gospel music. All are invited to view this video presentation.
