Rapid Transit Community Forum

September 29, 2015 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Free

Bus Rabid Transit will be explored at a Community Forum set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 29, at the Onondaga Free Library, 4840 W. Seneca Turnpike. This session will be the 11th in a series hosted by the Moving People Transportation Coalition.  These discussions are based on critical concerns about the future of transportation in our community. The featured speaker for the evening will be an official from the Capital District Transportation Authority.

BusPlus, CDTA’s version of bus rapid transit service, was introduced to upstate New York on Route 5 in April 2011, connecting Albany, Colonie, Niskayuna and Schenectady. The award-winning project has resulted in 20 percent ridership gains and prompted CDTA to pursue BRT routes on two of the region’s busiest transit corridors: Washington-Western Avenues and on Routes 4 and 32 along the Hudson River.

In addition to the CDTA official, Mario Colone, Program Manager, Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council, will outline the current study for Bus Rapid Transit or Light Rail in the Syracuse area.

“In January 2014, the NYSDOT, in coordination with the STMC and Centro, completed the Syracuse Transit System Analysis [STSA] as part of The I-81 Corridor Study effort.  The STSA reviewed the entire Centro system and outlined strategies for enhancing transit in the region. One of the recommendations from the STSA was to pursue higher-intensity transit services along the DestinyUSA/Regional Transportation Center to Syracuse University and James Street/South Avenue corridors.

Phase 1 of the SMART study which was launched in June 2015, is advancing this recommendation.  The current study will evaluate modes, alignments, station locations, ridership, service plans, capital/maintenance/operational costs, economic development, land use, zoning engineering feasibility and environmental factors associated with these two corridors and identify a single corridor preferred alternative.”
Also making comments will be Frank Kobliski, executive director of the Central New York Regional Transportation Authority in Syracuse.
The session is free and open to the public.
