This year’s event to also feature play, ‘Poor Girl Rich Girl’
The Payton Memorial Temple Church of God in Christ will hold its annual Valentine’s Ball Saturday, Feb. 8, at the church, located at 1816 Midland Ave. The doors open at 6 p.m., and the event will include dinner and staged, Christian play, “Poor Girl Rich Girl,” presented by Cordero Production.
Earnestine Jay, founder of the Valentine’s Ball and the Rev. Thomas Jay’s wife, says she has received great feedback about the event and is expecting a big turnout this year.
“I’m very excited,” she said. “A lot of people first came out of curiosity, but they had so much fun, they keep coming back. Everyone just comes to mingle and laugh.”
Hors d’oeuvres, finger-foods and Valentine’s candy will be served before the play, giving attendees time to talk with other guests and exchange gifts with their loved ones. A photographer will also take photos to document the night for those who want to remember a special Valentine’s Day.
The menu for the night will be a choice of either Cornish hen or rib-eye steak, along with an assortment of vegetables, garlic mashed potatoes and roasted corn. Jay says youth from the church — dressed in formal attire — will be serving and waiting on tables.
Jay originally started the Valentine’s Ball in 2010, and says it’s a great event because it’s all about love and having fun. Some couples will even renew their wedding vows during the night.
“Sometimes people feel that because we’re in the church, we can’t have fun,” said Jay laughing. “There’s not a time to just dress up and go out and enjoy each other without church. So I think that’s my most important reason for this, is to show church people, especially the Pentecostal church family, that there is a way to have fun and still be saved.”
