Make sure back to school shots are up-to-date
August is National Immunization Awareness Month.
As you get the backpacks and new clothes ready to go back to school, don’t forget to make sure your children are up-to-date on their shots (immunizations). Children entering kindergarten and 6th grade are due for more shots before attending school this fall.
New York State law requires shots be up-to-date to attend public school. Keeping children’s immunizations up-to-date can both protect your child and help prevent the spread of certain diseases.
If you are a parent or guardian, review your children’s shot record, talk to your health care provider, and make sure they are up-to-date and ready to go back to school. Schedule your appointment TODAY for any needed shots. Getting their shots early can help to prevent missed days of school once the year is underway.
For children without health insurance, the Onondaga County Immunization Clinic can provide all shots needed for school entrance. The clinic is open every Thursday morning from 8:30-11:30 and is located at 301 Slocum Ave. in Syracuse. No appointment is necessary and patients are seen on a first come, first serve basis. For more information on the immunization clinic, contact the Onondaga County Health Department at 435-2000.
