On Saturday, March 3, the Syracuse Poster Project will collaborate with The Stand for the second year in a row to present the South Side poetry workshop. The workshop, which will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at the South Side Communication Center, is a free event designed to help people with their Haiku writing technique.
According to Herm Card, former board member for the Syracuse Poster Project, who will also be leading the workshop, Haiku is a short poem written in three lines. Card said Haiku is an important writing style because it helps get rid of unnecessary words. Card said people often bury the meaning of their work when they write too much.
“You have all these thoughts and ideas but if you can condense it down to that little bit then you’ve said what you need to say,” Card said.
Card is a volunteer and former board member at the Poster Project, an organization that combines poetry with art. Every year the organization accepts Haiku submissions from the community. Artists then draw paintings that correspond with their poem on a poster. The posters are then displayed at a showing and later placed at various locations around Syracuse.
Card said he hopes the workshop will not only help writers but encourage people to get involved with The Poster Project, an organization he says strengthens the community.
The South Side Communication Center is located at 2331 S. Salina St. The workshop is open to all ages and no registration is required. To learn more, contact Tara Donaldson at (315) 882-1054 or ashley@mysouthsidestand.com.
