Syracuse City School Board Creates Additional Opportunities for Community Feedback on New School Superintendent

Results will help identify candidates who will advance city’s unique vision of school reform that includes a promise for all students to attend college

The Syracuse City School District Board of Education, in collaboration with Say Yes to Education and Cascade Consulting, have been conducting focus group meetings and community forums recently. A great deal of important information has been provided in these sessions, which will directly be reflected in the search criteria that will inform the selection process.

Unfortunately, December’s weather has made travel to evening sessions difficult and may have limited participation of some members of the community. In order to ensure that the entire community has the opportunity to provide input, we are planning to conduct three additional community forums Thursday, Jan. 6.

The schedule for these forums is as follows:

Refugee Assistance Center (501 Park St.): Jan. 6, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

SWCC (401 South Ave.): Jan. 6, 2 to 4 p.m.

Bethany Baptist (149 Beattie St.): Jan. 6, 6 to 8 p.m.

These interactive sessions are designed to gather the public’s input on the qualifications and skills needed of the next Syracuse superintendent. Input is desired on the desired characteristics and background of a new school leader, an assessment of the major strengths and challenges of the school districts as well as an evaluation of the quality of education Syracuse students currently receive.

Say Yes and Cascade will use the feedback garnered from the community forums to help recommend a group of candidates to present to the board who best represent Syracuse’s vision for education.

Following these sessions, Board of Education members will be provided with a draft “spec” or search criteria.
