Images from past Photo Walks on view at Beauchamp Library
Prior to the pandemic, we hosted a special reception for our photo exhibit showcasing photos from our past 10 years.
The month-long show coincided with The Stand’s 2020 March Anniversary issue and highlighted one image from each year of the past decade. The show was cut short a week into its opening when COVID-19 restrictions closed the Link Gallery, where the collection was on display.
Now, images from The Stand’s annual Photo Walk will be back up and featured at Beauchamp Branch Library, 2111 S. Salina St., during the month of June.
The exhibit will precede the library’s Summer Reading Programs for youth, teens and adults that starts June 28. Images can be viewed on the library’s first floor during public hours. For updated library information, call (315) 435-3395.
Each summer, The Stand and a growing group of participants, trek through the neighborhood for the Photo Walk. We look forward to gathering on a hot Saturday in July to explore, meet neighbors and document the South Side in photos. Led by volunteer Photo Walk Leaders, groups venture out for several hours, some taking hundreds of images, then return to share their favorite moments with the group. Last summer was different. We couldn’t gather in person due to the pandemic, but we still saw a huge need to document this moment in history in photos. Thus our photo contest was born as well as a new partnership with the Urban Video Project.
This summer in 2021, we set out to plan an event that could be flexible and ensure all felt comfortable as our city and nation begins to open back up. We have again planned a photo contest with some amazing prizes.
Participants can enter photos — taken citywide — on a rolling basis until Aug. 1 in four categories:
• Street Life — A shot that best captures an activity or summer life from a Syracuse neighborhood
• Architecture — Capture our city’s angles, from Neoclassical Styles to the Arts & Crafts movement
• Portrait — A shot of the many faces of those who call Syracuse home
• Scenic — Capture Syracuse’s essence from a new vantage point
In addition to the contest, we are also planning five small, guided walks throughout the city. Keep an eye out for further details and to register. These will be offered on multiple Saturday’s in July, providing a greater variety of locations to explore, people to meet and dates to attend.
