Students Donate to Meals on Wheels

Fifth-grade students from McKinley-Brighton Elementary School presented a check in the amount of $200 to Meals on Wheels of Syracuse Wednesday, Dec. 10.

The donation was from the proceeds of “rice bag” sales. The students gathered in the school library, performed a song, and explained why they decided to donate to the non-profit, which will deliver nearly 194,000 meals this year.

The students also made holiday cards to be delivered to many of the meal recipients.

Representatives from Meals on Wheels were given rice bags which included the attached note: “This little pillow filled with rice, is such a comforting device. Microwave for 2 minutes on high and kiss those aches and pains goodbye. Apply it to the troubled spot, the heat will ease the pain a lot. Or warm those little toes so cold, you’ll find this nice to have and hold. Or freeze it for a little while, and fix that booboo up in style. Instead of a compress made of ice, use this pillow filled with rice!”

During Wednesday’s snowstorm, Meals on Wheels of Syracuse employees and volunteers delivered 1,032 meals to homebound seniors in the city of Syracuse.
