On the evening of Wednesday, Aug. 19, we’ll reveal judges’ top picks in this year’s Photo Contest.
The BIG reveal will begin at 6:30 p.m. over Zoom and live-streamed on The Stand’s Facebook Page. Email ashley@mysouthsidestand.com to receive the link to join us on Zoom and hear directly from judges. A selection of the top three images in each of the five categories will be shown.
Why we held the contest this year –
Each July, we’ve hold our an annual Photo Walk to capture the city’s South Side neighborhood in photos, but due to the pandemic this annual gathering was canceled.
But we didn’t want to stop documenting everyday life. So in discussing with our past Photo Walk leaders, we worked to figure out a way to still capture Syracuse in photos: How is life continuing despite the coronavirus; how are children coping; changes made for social distancing. And as we discussed planning, George Floyd was murdered and protests began nationwide. We wanted to also capture how Syracuse responded.
To help incentivize more to go out independently to take photos and participate, we added prizes, having it evolve into a contest with the goal to continue to have the community capture this moment in time.
