The Stand will still participate with the writing workshop being held Nov. 7 at Dunbar Center but will continue without Prof. Steve Davis. The two journalism sessions will be led by Ashley Hanry, director of The Stand, and may possibly feature a guest presenter.
Prof. Davis will be leaving for L.A. that weekend for a meeting to plan a journalism workshop for next summer. The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and Prof. Davis are part of the News 21 Program. It is a national initiative led by 12 of America’s leading research universities to help revitalize schools of journalism. It was held at Newhouse this past summer and will continue to be offered at the school this summer.
But that weekend in the South Side, we’ll still cover all the journalism basics along with interview techniques and tricks and cover how students can use their new skills to contribute to The Stand.
The conference will have two workshop slots reserved for us: 10 to 10:50 a.m. and 11 to 11:50 a.m.
Registrations begins at 9:30 a.m.
Other writing workshop topics will include:
* Claiming one’s writer’s voice
* Organizing One’s Writing
* Writing for multiple purposes and audiences
* Writing the college essay
* The Power of Language in Writing
* Spoken Word Poetry
* Telling Your Story
* Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling
