In its fourth year, the Upper State Independent Awards (USIA), scheduled Saturday, Nov. 6, acknowledges independent musicians, poets, models, comedians, photographers, choreographers and more. Votes from the community were accepted online up until Oct. 31 to select winners in each of the 30 awards categories.

A Tribute to Sensei Vinson Grace

At the Southwest Community Center, Saturday, Oct. 23, were family and friends of Vinson Grace, gathered together to remember and celebrate his life-long achieved accomplishments. Nationwide program places ‘Grandparents’ in 30 Syracuse sites

Bill Zimmer, 56, helps out at a Van Duyn Elementary School third-grade class every day. The students call him “Grandpa.” He is part of a national program called Foster Grandparents that places senior citizens who are older than 55 in classrooms or day care centers as assistants.

Fit Kids Clubs in Session

Syracuse Wellness Program Aims to Combat Childhood Obesity Funding was approved for the After School Expanded Fitness and Wellness Program, known as the Fit Kids Clubs, at the Common Council meeting last month. The program started Oct. 13 and will run through Dec. 17. The main focus of the program is to combat childhood obesity.
