Air Force Airman 1st Class Sarah E. Pittarelli graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.?She is the daughter of Karen Weber of Atlantic Blvd., Key West, Fla., and Mark Pittarelli of Maywood Drive, Syracuse. Pittarelli is a 2007 graduate of Key West High School, Fla.

Barber shops, salons in the South Side cultivate friendships and a sense of community

Thirty years ago Lionel Milliken went looking for a barber and found a friend.

That friend, John Murray, not only cuts Lionel’s hair, but now cuts the hair of Lionel’s wife, Carol.

On a recent day in the barber shop, the three friends chatted about Murray’s vacation in Florida. They talked about playing golf and having dinner soon while Murray trimmed Carol’s hair.

Mentoring Program Seeks Volunteers

The Center for Community Alternatives seeks to help ‘at risk’ youth change their future through support and friendship.

Jason Torreano, 24, works as the mentor recruiter at the Center for Community Alternatives located at 115 E. Jefferson St., Suite 300, in Syracuse. The Stand’s community correspondent Ame Donkor conducted a Q&A with Jason to learn more.

Graduating Senior Believes Art is Power

Corcoran High School graduating senior Lennard Streat dreams of using his artistic talent to give back to the community.

The 17-year-old is willing to donate the time and material to paint a mural in the South Side of Syracuse as a form a neighborhood revitalization.

“Art is something people take lightly, but it impacts them in a big way,” Streat said.

Second Showing of 15th Ward Documentary Tonight

The red carpet premiere of “Syracuse’s 15th Ward and Beyond” began with a reception Saturday, May 22, at Syracuse Stage’s Storch Theater. And if you missed the opening, you’ll get a second chance to see the historic film May 27.

No reservations will be taken for the Thursday showing; it will be first come first served.
