Kevin Frank has been named the executive director of the Brady Faith Center. He will replace the current executive director, David Allen, who will retire from his post after three and a half years of service. Frank, whose appointment is effective May 3, will join Father John Schopfer, Brady’s pastoral director to carry out the mission of serving those in need on Syracuse’s South West side. Harold Jerrod Blackmon’s home is more than just a music studio. It is a place for local youth to escape the dangers of the streets and hone their musical creativity. Blackmon, CEO of the South Side music group called Crime Street, is an award-winning producer known in the music world as Mazaroddi.
Leading the Way to Engineering
A new grant-funded program at Corcoran High School aims to inspire students to pursue engineering careers.
Project Lead the Way is a math and science college preparatory program featuring two courses that introduce high school students to the field of engineering. Students in the program are also eligible to earn up to three college credits. Read the rest of this entry »
Branch’s Driving School Celebrates 47 Years
One of the South Side Innovation Center’s first members celebrated its 47th anniversary Saturday, April 24.
Branch’s Driving School, headquartered on West Genesee Street downtown, had offices at the SSIC when the center first opened on South Salina Street. The SSIC offers local businesses business counseling and a place to start.
Deraux Branch, the president of the driving school, said that one of the challenges of small and minority-owned businesses is that they often start from the homes of the owners.
New Gospel Show to Launch in May

Little Willie Gatewood and The Toronados
Thank God I’m old enough to remember Little Willie Gatewood and The Toronados. That was one of the baddest (and I mean that in a good way) bands that ever played in the Syracuse area.
Gatewood’s band (we call him “Gate”) was comprised of Chuck Phillips on the electric guitar, A. C. Goldston on the electric bass, Willie Simms on drums, Joe Cutchen on trumpet and vocals, L. C. Glover and John Tolbert on tenor sax and Little Willie Gatewood himself on the alto saxophone.
