Civil Rights Cold Cases Discussed

A panel of advocates for further investigation into civil rights murders explained why their cases were important, even after 40 years, to an audience that included children from the South Side.

The Cold Case Justice Initiative presented the panel discussion, held Saturday, Feb. 27, on the Syracuse University campus. The justice initiative is made up of a group of law professors, law students, an investigative journalist and the families of the victims.

Go Vote

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Khalid Bey, 38, who works for the New York state Senate here in Syracuse. He is the Spokesperson for the organization Go Vote! I’m sure most of you have heard the name Go Vote by now. But for those of you who haven’t, here’s the scoop:

Go Vote! is a socio-political organization based out of Syracuse. It’s been around since September 2008 and has a following of approximately 1,000 members.

Teresa Branch Benefit

Blueprints of New Supermarket Revealed

The Jubilee Homes of Syracuse, Inc. held an open house Saturday, Feb. 20, to reveal the blueprints of a new South Side grocery store.

Wearing winter coats, hats and gloves, community members and elected officials gathered at 611 South Ave. to view the plan that will transform the 22,000 square-foot building into a 33,000 square-foot community supermarket that will include a cafe, credit union, dry cleaner and pharmacy.

The Recipe to Winning a Science Fair

At the beginning of the school year if someone would have told Mahogany Anderson that she would win the National Society of Black Engineers Regional Science Fair she would have laughed.

But on Nov. 15, 2009 she won, and this month she will travel to Canada to compete at the next level.
