Harold Ford Jr. Speaks in South Side

Former Tennessee Congressman Harold C. Ford Jr. spoke about the economy, jobs and immigration reform at the Southwest Community Center Sunday as part of a whirlwind tour of Syracuse.

Ford, a 39-year-old Democrat who served in the U.S. Congress from 1997 to 2007, is considering challenging New York junior senator Kirsten Gillibrand in this November’s election. He spoke for about 12 minutes before answering four audience questions.

Addressing an attentive crowd of about 50 people, Ford said that improving the economy should be the government’s first priority now and offered fairly concrete suggestions for how to do it.

Say Yes Seeks Volunteers

More than 70 university students attended the Say Yes to Education volunteer meeting held on the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Syracuse University.

The program that offers free college tuition to all students who qualify in the Syracuse City School District is seeking volunteers for its kindergarten through fourth-grade after school programs.

“You should never be denied access to education because your parents can’t afford it,” said Executive Director Rachael Gazdick to the auditorium of students.

Gwen Ifill Keynote Speaker at MLK Celebration

We must reconsider Martin Luther King Jr.’s achievements, PBS anchor and journalist Gwen Ifill told attendees of Syracuse University’s event to honor the ’60s Civil Rights leader Sunday night.

“Most of our children don’t even know what a lunch counter is anymore,” Ifill, the managing editor and moderator of Washington Week, told the crowd at the Carrier Dome.

‘Raising Our Black Boys’

Six-Week Book Discussion Continues through Feb. 25

“Raising Our Black Boys,” a six-week book discussion group for women and men, began Thursday, Jan. 21. Presented by Mothers Offering Youth Opportunity (MOYO), discussions focus on two books by Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu: “Countering the Conspiracy to Destroy Black Boys” and “Raising Black Boys.”

Volunteers Needed at Mary Nelson’s Youth Center

Mary Nelson is in need of some help for her youth center. If interested in sparing a few hours to volunteer at the center, please contact Mary at (315) 403-0220  or e-mail NelsonM@upstate.edu.

The number of youth and family attendance has greatly increased, according to Nelson. So the center is in need of help for its afterschool programs and Saturday morning programs.

100 Black Men Elects Ex-Syracuse Councilor, Others to Board

Former Syracuse Common Councilor Charles Anderson was recently elected by the 100 Black Men of Syracuse Inc. membership to serve a one-year term as the organization’s vice president of administration. Anderson, who represented the city’s Fourth District on the Common Council from 1985 to 1997, is the chief records officer of 100 Black Men of Syracuse.
