Xavier Canty wants to experience the feeling of saving someone’s life. Tremaine Williams, who wrestles, wishes to repay all the physical therapists who repaired his injuries. And Delvon Shepherd, a 200-pound middle linebacker, escapes by writing stories and poetry.
In Corcoran High School, there are plenty of students like these three. Some want to be teachers. Others want their own business. Some are just searching for a route to college.

Terry Webb Jr. wasn’t interested in SUNY Oswego at all. Last year, the 16-year-old Syracuse native went to the state college hoping to find programs in technical engineering or math science. He came away unimpressed.
This year, Webb went on another trip, this time to a campus right down the street: Syracuse University.

The Reformed Presbyterian Church held its annual Children’s Christmas Party Saturday, Dec. 12.
The church, located at 2517 S. Salina St., was festively decorated for the event, with stars hanging from the ceiling along with small white Christmas lights.
According to Debbi Wellman, the church’s coordinator of Children’s Ministries, the goal of the event was “to reach into the neighborhood and show that our doors are open.”

The annual South Side Christmas Tree Lighting was held at the corner of East Colvin and South Salina streets Monday, Dec. 7.
Despite a sprinkling of snow, a crowd of more than 50 South Side residents was on hand for the event, sponsored by Key Bank.

The Stand’s Advertising Presentation held Dec. 5 was able to introduce the South Side’s newest publication to local business owners and garnered positive feedback. Our first print issue is set to come out over Valentine’s Day Weekend — so get ready to fall in love with The Stand in 2010.
