The Doo Wop Era

There was a time, from the late 1950s until the early ’60s, that if you saw a group of young black men standing together on a street corner in their neighborhoods, they were only singing. They were singing the music of the time. Music which became known as “doo wop.” At the time of its popularity, it was called R&B (Rhythm and Blues), but was later dubbed doo wop by a New York City D.J.

A Grandmother’s Voice

R. Deborah Davis, a professor at SUNY Oswego and grandmother of seven, speaks with The Stand’s community reporter and retired teacher Evelyn Williams about her grandchildren, their education through the Syracuse City School District and the obstacles they have had to overcome. Davis continues to “push” her youngest grandchildren to continue their educations despite the failures she see in our public school system.

November’s Journalism Workshop provided by The Stand was on How to Cover a Community Event and was presented by Prof. Steve Davis. This month we had 13 attendees — five new visitors and eight who have attended at least one prior workshop.

‘Precious’ Arrives to Syracuse

I know one thing on my schedule this weekend: watching “Precious” … finally.

The film based on Sapphire’s book “Push” opens today in Syracuse theaters. The film was a winner at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and came out in major cities two weeks ago.

Hope is Supermarket will Revitalize South Side

The leaders of an effort to get a grocery store on the South Side were short on answers but long on optimism in a public meeting Thursday night, Nov. 19, at the Southwest Community Center.

Walt Dixie, executive director of Jubilee Homes of Syracuse, Inc. and leader of the Neighborhood Supermarket Initiative, stressed that the meeting was only preliminary, but painted a picture of an independent store that would transform the community.

“[I hope] this grocery store becomes the catalyst for revitalization,” Dixie said. “We don’t have all the answers right now, but we have the faith that we can make it happen.”
