John Jackson, the cook at Faith Hope Community Center, remembers a time when two young boys got into a fight a couple of blocks away from the center. One of the staff members somehow persuaded the boys to come to the center.

The Stand’s community reporter Arnett Haygood-El captures the day’s happenings at Mary Nelson’s Eighth annual Youth Day Barbecue held Saturday, Aug. 15. This annual event provides needed school supplies and backpacks to all students who attend — free of charge. Attendees also receive lunch and can watch entertainment. The event also draws a number of community representatives and community organizations.

Summer Camp

Donations help campers get the most out of summer camp

Close to 20 paper bumblebees, adorned in sparkles and all colors of the rainbow, hang from the ceiling of the arts and crafts room at the summer camp run by Greater New Testament Missionary Baptist Church. A table in the room is filled with markers, crayons, magazine cutouts and coloring books.
